It will be here before we know it....

I think that we have let most everyone know that Jesse has received his call and where he is going. We come from a part member family so a lot of people don't understand what Jesse is doing. None of Jerry's family are members and only my sister in my family is. I have been doing a lot of studying about the mission that Jesse will be serving in and it is a very diverse mission. Some of the areas are in the city of Lima, others are in the rich farmland region, others are in the Andes Mountains and yet others are one the edge of the Amazon rainforest. The climactic changes from one region to the other are quite varied. Some areas never have rain and are warm and arid all year where other areas are wet with a distinct rainy season and much cooler temperatures all year because of the high elevation. Since it is still winter here we decided we had better go ahead and buy some sweaters for Jesse's mission because once spring gets here you won't be able to find a sweater or hardly a long sleeved shirt for that matter.

The Bishop called today and he wants Jesse to bear his testimony tomorrow and announce to everyone where he got his call to. This is such an exciting time for him. He also has to be very careful physically and spiritually. Satan would like nothing more than to prevent Jesse from serving his mission. He will try to convince him that he can take risks that he shouldn't. As his mother it is my job to try to counter that influence and help him to see where some of his feelings and thoughts maybe coming from. It is not easy to do sometimes because he feels that he is going through this right of passage and is a man now and therefore should be allowed to make his own decisions. While that is true, my greatest mission in life has been to teach him right from wrong and to do everything within my power to be certain that he is able to worthily serve his mission. When we are this close to the prize there is no way I'm going to let it slip through my finger if I can help it at all. Anyway, that is what is going on in the preparation department.

  1. Hello from the great Peru Lima East Mission. I hope you haven't taken the tags off the sweaters that you purchased because young missionaries here are allowed only sweaters without buttons, zippers, or collars. They must be pull-overs with V-neck, so that the white shirt collar and tie are clearly visible.

Other clothing hints: This is really a two-suit mission, even though the current approved letter says one suit. The good news is that you can buy a high-quality, taylor-made suit here for $70. You can also buy white shirts, ties, sweaters, sox, and almost any other type of clothing that a missionary might need.

We are excited about welcoming Elder Fortenberry into our mission.

  2. Elder and Sister Zimmerman,

Thanks so much for posting!!! We actually haven't even purchased the sweaters yet but we will be very soon. Thank you for the clarification on what the Elders can wear. Jesse is the first missionary in our family so any tips you can give are greatly appreciated but it is good to know that items can be purchased there so cheaply. Am I correct in my assessment of the climate and terrain of the mission? Jesse is very excited to start his mission. Thanks for all you do.
